The David Kau Christmas Party

The David Kau Christmas Party

After almost a month of driving around with a David Kau branded Chevrolet Aveo advertising one of the most anticipated parties of the year, it was finally time to head down to Kroonstad’s Kroon Park for the 9th Annual David Kau Christmas Party.  Despite a plan to stop this party from happening, thousands gathered in this town in the Free State to not only celebrate Christmas with family but also to watch and listen to their favourite MC’s and DJ’s on the decks.

JR’s DJ – Thee Gobbs

The gates opened around twelve with some of the local DJ’s playing some old school kwaito hits to set us in the mood. Rapper Jr’s official DJ “Thee Gobbs” took over to play some of the hottest tunes from his recently released 3 disc compilation “Mechanix of House” featuring G Funk and 2Lani the warrior. The mood intensified as the sun set and more people began to flock in as braai stands and camp chairs were packed away to prepare for the madness that was to come from Lulo Cafe. The Metro FM award winning DJ set the crowd into a frenzy when he played one of the hit songs he did with Nothende called “I wanna love you”. Yep, he had the girls in Free State screaming ‘that’s my song’!

In a true spirit of Christmas, a brand new Chevrolet Spark Lite was given away after a mini raffle was held . The winner was picked from a hand full of chancers who got their names in the bag by purchasing a raffle ticket for 10 bucks… an R80 000 car for only R10?! Lerato Jeremia drove away with the prize. Nothing like an upgrade from playing squash in a 4 plus 1 (local taxis) to a brand new vehicle. After the draw, It was time for the performances from some of SA’s top hip hop acts with new kid on the block Red Button opening the line-up joined by JR on stage. Amu aka The Principal schooled the locals with tracks from his new album followed by MR Selwyn,  T- Pee and Flabba who gave us songs from his last solo project and ended off with one the hits from 2010, “Superhero”.

David Kau

DJ Zinhle came on to add a feminine touch on the decks and made the crowd  boogie down. She’s right  at the top of the list of my favourite DJ’s. I did justice to her awesome set by leaving the somewhat stuck-up VIP area and joined in with the masses. I thought I’d be king of the ‘circle’ with my Jozi moves but that wasn’t the case as I was shown flames by some super talented guys who use the name “Majaivane” as their first name. I will have to take some dance lessons before I become Majaivane Denis.

DJ Zinhle

Seeing that I’m not much of a hip hop head, I left the real heads at it and mingled with some of the familiar faces that were around back in the VIP area when DJ Milkshake came on . The likes of Hlelo and Ntando Masina who were with their brother, The Naked DJ  were in the area sporting new hair do’s and so was Super Sport presenter, Mpho Maboi. Other familiar faces belonged to DJ Claude and the cigar smoking Kenny Kunene who took time to come party in his local province. After 12 hours of dancing, sitting, talking and walking, fatigue caught up with me and before my eye lids could shut, I left for the hotel to rest. Kroonstad was quiet an experience, pity I won’t be making it back to the Free State for the Beach Party happening on the 30th in Welkom but I will be putting my party hat for 2010 to a rest in Polokwane *I hope*….for those going to Welkom, hauweng!

David Kau’s Christmas Party: how it benefits Kroonstad +who is trying to stop it

David Kau’s Christmas Party: how it benefits Kroonstad +who is trying to stop it

It’s almost time for  David Kau’s annual Christmas party. The event started at his mom’s house in 2002 as a small party with about 100 people. In 2005 the event got too big for the house, it was then decided that the party would be moved to a bigger venue – Holiday Valley Guest House.

In 2005 about 800 people attended the event ( this was achieved by just word of mouth advertising). In 2006 about 1500 people attended the event (this was achieved by word of mouth marketing and circulation of flyers within Kroonstad); In 2007 about 2000 people were in attendance (same marketing concepts were used as in the previous years). In 2008 about 3000 party people attended the event. Due to the popularity of the event, flyers were distributed in major cities across Free State, Lesotho, Johannesburg, Pretoria, 60’s party in Mafikeng, David Kau’s website and other entertainment websites; Since 2008 party has been attended by people from all over Free State, Gauteng, Lesotho, North West. For the year 2010, there is an expected crowd of about 6 000 or more.

Benefits:

The media exposure this event brings is worth hundreds of thousands of Rands, and within the next 2 years will be worth millions, which would be very very beneficial to both Kroonpark, and Kroonstad as a whole.

Employment:

The Christmas party creates employment in many sectors.  Last year, more than 50 people  were employed as security marshalls, and internships were given to local students who want to learn about marketing, events and hospitality. More employment opportunities are being created this year.
Revenue injection:

With almost 100 hotel rooms booked  so far for this year, that’s at least 100 cars and 100 couples staying in Kroonstad, plus hundreds of other visitors who do not sleep over who come from Welkom, Oodendaal, and other towns. These  people spend well over R 100 000.00 on food and petrol on this day in Kroonstad. This does not include alcohol sales.

Problems:

Certain guest houses in Kroonstad do not allow black visitors to stay in their guest houses. There have been tensions regarding the venue as some members of the community are unhappy that the event is taking place this year.  These issues will not affect the christmas party. The event has grown organically and will continue to do so, in Kroonstad.

Added benefits:

This event brings life to the small town of Kroonstad every year, giving residents a chance to celebrate the year and each other with celebrities and visitors to Kroonstad.

The event also promotes Kroonstad to the rest of South Africa. For more information about the sale of tickets and the venue, and how you could win a Chevy Spark, click here.

Safety and Security.

There has never been a single incident of violence. Security personnel has been hired to ensure safety of the patrons. Due to the nature of the event and the size of the community, the local police and traffic department also play a major role with traffic control.

There is a  “no fire arms policy”, except for members of the SAPS.

We strongly support the “Arrive Alive” Campaign and we strongly oppose “drinking and driving”, people are provided with accommodation details in and around Kroonstad for the night, eliminating the need to drink if they have driven there.
