The 2nd annual Comics Choice Awards were held last night at the Teatro Theatre in Monter Casino. It was a glittering event, one with certainly a bigger budget thanks to sponsors coming on board after they understood what the awards were all about. With Comics nominating and voting for each other, the system is designed that a comedian could never vote for himself and thus winners are literally selected by their peers in the same fraternity. I don’t know if the same principle could work for musicians but maybe those Kwaito and House Music Awards we were promised could look into this. There is a category were the public gets to vote for the winner, the Audience Choice Award but from what I hear, the public barely vote.
John Vlismas
With only 6 categories for winners I suppose they are all big winners, Trevor Noah was voted Comic of the Year for the breakthrough he has had for SA Comedy in the US. He was praised by awards organiser John Vlismas for his sterling work in the industry. “So you think You Are Funny” season 1 winner Sifiso Nene walked away with the Audience Choice Award much to his delight, big ups to the Taxi drivers who voted for him while Tats Nkonzo proved the judges of the same show wrong by cracking it in the industry 4 years after reaching the top 8 and being told perhaps he should consider music as a career. He also did a great job hosting the not so glamorous SAMAs 18 Friday night awards with Tumi Morake earlier on this year. Here are the rest of the winners:
