Idols Top 9 Review

Idols Top 9 Review

Not knowing whether I’d have access to see John Legend perform with a rumoured 23 piece band made me avoid disappointment by making sure I RSVP’d for the Idols recording on Friday. Mr Legend did not disappoint in giving us a different version of his hit single “Tonight”. I must say even though it sounded incredible, the original is still better. Our

Top 9 Idols didn’t let us down either, or at least the majority of them didn’t, there were however a few that were a bit flat.First up on the show was Khaya with the rendition of David Guetta’s “Without You” featuring Usher. As much as the judges were thrilled with it, I wasn’t. I felt it was a wrong song choice especially because his voice sounded strained. Gareth Cliff was right about him jumping up and down, it made his voice go up and down as well and for a self-confessed two left feeted man with a great voice, singing would have possibly helped him come out tops. There’s certain songs for his kind of voice, his choice must have lost cost him a few fans.  Monde followed up with Daughtry ‘s “Crawling Back To You”, which was nice because he was able to get out of his shell and let his hair down, literally.  I’m certain he did well enough to keep his fans voting for him, I enjoyed his singing of the second chorus even more.

One of this week’s top performers for me was Melissa with Joe Goddard’s “Gabriel” featuring Valentina. Risky song choice but the risk was worth it as it paid off. If she keeps this up, she could win the competition. Shekinah was another one who didn’t let us down this week, her interpretation of Lady Gaga’s “Marry The Night” was awesome. She used her huge voice to her advantage and  she should win more supporters. Simphiwe performed Ne-Yo’s “Beautiful Monster”, I felt it came out beautifully, he shined like his suit, which is something I have come to expect. Tshidi proved to be on top of her game again this week with Evanescent’s “ My Immortal”.

Another risk taker this week was Nosipho. She chose a song by Bruno Mars called “Grenade” and she sang…not so great. I  It’s a pity she seems down, one could swear she’s just going through the motions and doesn’t have the self-belief that she can win and with better song choices, she can do better than just being in the Top 9 . Someone please remind her that she got this far because she’s got talent, no one can take that away from her. Dominic was also my weakest performer this week along with Khaya and so was Chloe. Dom sang “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz while Chloe tried rock with Paramoe’s “Misery Business”. Like the song says, it was miserable and the judges said something similar thing. Now Last week I would have never predicted that Obakeng would leave, I have voted for my two favourite performers this week, vote for yours!
