As winter stamps its mark on New York City, I found myself holed up in my apartment a lot this past week, scared to confront the shocking cold outside. I recall complaining about the cold a couple of weeks ago, but it turns out what I was complaining about then was only a sneak peek into what New York winters are really like! Temperatures have reached the below zero mark, the winds are icy cold and with evidence of light snow, the city’s residents have been forced to pile on layers upon layers of clothing in a bid to keep warm. Expecting temperatures to drop to extreme lows, we’re in for a long icy ride! Bbbrrrrrrrr!
Determined to enjoy and explore the city despite the crippling cold, it remains my mission to discover every little nook, neighbourhood, and layer of the city by the time the final whistle is blown on this amazing journey. So this weekend my girl and I stepped out to roam around the West Village, which is also known as “Little Bohemia”, and is the centre of bohemian lifestyle on the West Side.
The neighborhood is primarily residential, with a variety of small and cosy restaurants, coffee shops and as well as numerous clothing shops ranging from high end designers such as Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren to small independently owned boutiques. While getting lost (happily so) in the streets of this neighbourhood, I felt like I was in some small European city and away from the hustle and bustle that Manhattan is famous for. With beautiful architecture and a charming laid back vibe, its no wonder many artists, writers and musicians call the West Village home.
While wandering around the West Village, we also stumbled on the famous Magnolia Bakery. One of the best bakeries in New York City and world-famous thanks to mentions and features in Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada, Magnolia is known for its delicious desserts and heaven sent cakes. After standing in the cold, in a queue that stretched out onto the street, we finally made it inside the bakery.
Between the deliciously fresh carrot cake and the to-die-for caramel cupcakes, I testify to the greatness that is Magnolia Bakery!
All in all, the West Village was a winner, and I have a strong feeling that it will become one of my firm favourites!
As for school, the work keeps piling on, the hours get longer, but the passion still burns. Along with my producing partners, I was proud to display some of our work at a screening held at the New York Film Academy last week. I was very pleased with our work, and look forward to learning more and working on more exciting projects. I am reminded everyday, in mostly small moments, how fortunate I am to be here, living my dream. And I am grateful every day.
On that note, I wish you a wonderfully productive week in your quest to achieving all that you dream of and that which your hearts desire.
